$20 for a 53 piece tool set, I have literally no tools of any sort, so this may be a good start. EDIT: It sold in about 40 seconds, shit... Still curious if it would have been a good deal though.

No ratchets no deal. Go to harbor freight and get some coupons. Spend $50 and come back with a cartload of tools.

looks like a pile of cheap crappy tools that might suffice for a dorm room.

If you don't have any tools sure. But I would go for something better than Chinese made hand tools. Craftsman is a good middle ground. But I'm spoiled, I bought my own toolbox full of shiny MAC tools.

It's okay, but not worth much more. They are all crappy tools. Invest in good ones. Harbor freight has great prices and coupons. I'm also a fan of Craftsman tools, they have a lifetime warranty. Also, for power tools, I usually splurge for DeWALT.

save yourself a lot of hassle. Avoid this cheap crap and the harbor freight stuff too. Its all chinese crap with poor fit and finish and the crap pot metal they make it out of will strip out.
For example in this tool kit, the hammer is undersized, the drill with removable bits is crap - the bits always fall out, the tape measure will fall apart after 15 uses, and I'm sure that level isn't worth a damn and 4 wrenchs aren't really enough you need a more complete set.
Craftsman like people suggest is good. I've had decent experiences with the home depot (huskey) and Lowes (kobalt) hand tools so you could go to your local big box and get some of those too.

something like that is good for hanging pictures and that's about it. Save up and get some 200-300 piece craftsman kit when it goes on sale for $150-200.

buy harbor freight to start. No better way to get a greater variety for the money (unless you wanna wake up really early for garage sales).
Tell all your friends/family to give you gift cards as gifts for any occassion. Replace old, broken or crappy tools as needed with the gift cards.

Keep a lookout on slickdeals or any other deal website for tool sales. I grabbed a 192 piece Craftsman tool set for less than 100 bucks. I happen to live next to a Sears, so swapping out tools by using the warranty is a piece of cake. Craftsman makes some pretty decent stuff that you can grab for super cheap on sale. Harbor freight is great until something breaks on you right when you need it most.

For another $10, this is roughly the same thing Home Depot 123 pc tool set. .

As a general rule, these sets are never very good quality. And this one looks especially limited especially in the wrench department. Like some others have stated - Sears and Harbor Freight are good places to start. Sign up for the e-mails from both places and when one of these: this or this goes on sale from Sears, scoop it up. It will have every socket you could ever possibly need, plus allen tools, wrenches, and drivers.
As a rule, I never buy anything from Harbor Freight without a coupon unless I absolutely need it that day. Everything goes on sale through a cycle and you see the items pop up every few months. Plus they have the 15, 20, 30% any item coupons every month too. I've found the HF tool chests to be very high quality. I like them more than the Craftsman ones I have. And the HF mobile tool chests are awesome for working on cars, just put all your vehicle specific tools in there and roll it right out to your car when you need it, everything in one place.
One thing my dad taught me was you buy a new tool for each new job you do, fixing something around the house, working on your car. And before you know it, you have every tool you will need to do any job.
